Confirmations

The Church of Ireland Confirmation Process

Preparation and Invitation

Confirmation in the Church of Ireland is a significant step in a person’s journey of faith. It is the moment when candidates publicly affirm for themselves the promises made at their Baptism. It marks both a personal commitment to Christ and a celebration shared by the whole church community.
In preparation for Confirmation, candidates take part in a period of teaching and reflection led by our Rector, Rev. Cathy Hallissey, together with members of the parish team. These sessions explore the meaning of Baptism and belonging to the Church; the Apostles’ Creed and the foundations of Christian belief; prayer and how to grow in faith; Holy Communion and worship within the Church of Ireland tradition; living out faith in everyday life; and the responsibilities of being a committed member of the Church.
Preparation is open, thoughtful, and age-appropriate, encouraging questions and discussion. While many candidates are teenagers, adults are also warmly invited to seek Confirmation.

The Confirmation Service

Confirmation normally takes place during a special service led by the Bishop, expressing the connection between our parish and the wider diocesan Church.
During the service, candidates renew the promises made at their Baptism and publicly declare their faith in Christ and their intention to follow Him. They affirm their personal commitment to the Christian life, taking responsibility for their faith rather than relying on the promises once made on their behalf. Each candidate then receives the laying on of hands by the Bishop, who prays that they may be strengthened by the Holy Spirit for the life of faith ahead. This prayer and blessing is the central act of Confirmation. Following Confirmation, candidates take their place as full communicant members of the Church, sharing fully in Holy Communion and in the worship and life of the parish community.

What Confirmation means

Confirmation is not a “graduation” from church, but a new beginning. It marks an important moment of growth in the Christian life — a step forward in faith rather than an end point. Through Confirmation, candidates make a mature and personal affirmation of their faith. They pray for and receive the strengthening of the Holy Spirit, deepening their sense of belonging within the Church community. It is also an encouragement to continue growing spiritually — through worship, service, prayer, and active participation in parish life. Confirmation marks the transition from being nurtured in faith by others to embracing and owning that faith personally, with confidence and commitment.

Who can be Confirmed?

Confirmation is open to anyone who has been baptised in a Christian tradition recognised by the Church. While many candidates are young people in their early teens, there is no fixed age, and each person is invited to come forward when they feel ready to make this commitment.
Adults who wish to affirm their faith, or who are seeking to become part of the Church of Ireland, are also warmly welcomed to be confirmed.
